Hi Mike,
We currently use Visual Studio 2005 with .NET Framework 2.0 using Winforms.

Will TeeChart Version 4.0 work for us?
Yes, as in v3, there's a specific build made with and for VS2005 and .NET Framework 2.0.
Where is a list of new features in 4.0?

We are revisiting the features of TeeChart for .NET 4. It is not clear if there are any features that would benefit us at this time.

In our application, we use Winforms, .NET 2.0 with VS 2005. We hope to upgrade the development environment to VS 2010 in the near future. We will be staying with Winforms not sure if we will target .NET 2.0 or .NET 4.0.

In TeeChart for .NET version 4.1

1. Did you keep the same class interfaces as in TeeChart for .NET 3.5 ?

2. Would we be able to drop the TeeChart for .NET version 4.0 in place of the 3.5 version?

3. Does it require .NET 4 or could we stay on .NET 2.0 if we like?

Is there any summary of fixes, features, or improvements that might be of interest to us going from 3.5 to 4.1 regarding Winforms? I see several things for Silverlight and WPF. We don't anticipate going to those in the near future, yet.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,
1. Did you keep the same class interfaces as in TeeChart for .NET 3.5 ?
Yes. Same class structure plus new features additional classes.
2. Would we be able to drop the TeeChart for .NET version 4.0 in place of the 3.5 version?
Yes, even easier, just replacing TeeChart.dll in your project references and maybe updating licenses.licx should be enough. No need to change components in the forms.
3. Does it require .NET 4 or could we stay on .NET 2.0 if we like?
You can continue with .NET Framework 2.0, there's a build for VS2005 and .NET Frameworkf 2.0.
Is there any summary of fixes, features, or improvements that might be of interest to us going from 3.5 to 4.1 regarding Winforms? I see several things for Silverlight and WPF. We don't anticipate going to those in the near future, yet.
You can find all bug fixes and new features implemented at the version info page. You can also find new features examples at the features demo.

I was looking at the Version Info page and don't see any features or enhancements that have been made. from 3.5 to version 2011 that apply to our use of TeeChart. Is there anything you can think of that might persuade me to upgrade if my application is on Winforms? I see I would definitely want to upgrade it I was moving to Silverlight or WPF.

A big enhancement for us would be improved speed. From the Version Info Page, there is nothing that indicates that the drawing time for charts with many series's has been improved. I did find reference in some of the literature regarding a white paper, http://www.teechart.net/files/teechartn ... rect2D.pdf.

If we upgrade to TeeChart .NET version 2011 will we be able to get better performance and be able to take advantage of SlimDX, in a Winforms application?

Hi Mike,

Performance is something we are constantly trying to improve. We try to eliminate any bottleneck that we may find.
If we upgrade to TeeChart .NET version 2011 will we be able to get better performance and be able to take advantage of SlimDX, in a Winforms application?
Definitely, as can be seen in the white-paper performance varies depending on the nature of each application but in general TeeChart.Direct2D.dll is much faster than TeeChart.dll. You can check it with your applications and the fully functional evalution version available here.

Last follow up question.

In the TeeChart.Direct2D.dll, does it take care of recognizing if you are running on a Windows 7 machine or does the application using the TeeChart have to have code in it to recognize whether you are running on Windows XP or Windows 7?

Hello Mike,

I inform you that TeeChart.Direct2D only works with Windows Vista, Windows Vista, 2008 i Windows 7, how explain in the white paper of Direct 2D. Therefore, you must install the TeeChart Direct2D in a compatible O.S.

Thanks,

My question is really about deployment. It is clear that TeeChart.Direct2D only works on a compatible OS. What is not clear is how it has things coded to behave. Our application is installed using Click Once via a web page. Our users could be on Windows XP, or Windows 7.

To use TeeChart.Direct2D do I need to install SlimDX as well or is all that encapsulated within TeeChart.Direct2D.dll?

If TeeChart.Direct2D.dll is installed with my application on a non-compatible OS.
a) Does the application throw an exception?
b) Doe the application run and TeeChart.Direct2D does nothing. All charting/drawing occur as if TeeChart.Direct2D is not present?

Based on the answers above, I don't know if I need to modify my Click Once installation to have to detect compatible OS's for TeeChart.Direct2D, or not. It depends on the how things have been coded.

Hello Mike,
To use TeeChart.Direct2D do I need to install SlimDX as well or is all that encapsulated within TeeChart.Direct2D.dll?
Yes you need install SlimDX, as explain in this doc that I think can help you. Moreover, there are a good news for you, so in this document told, ClickOnce is installed automatically, when you select option to include SlimDX.
If TeeChart.Direct2D.dll is installed with my application on a non-compatible OS.
]a) Does the application throw an exception?
It doesn't throw an exception, only doesn't allow install SlimDX, and how consequence, doesn’t install Direct2D.
b) Does the application run and TeeChart.Direct2D does nothing. All charting/drawing occur as if TeeChart.Direct2D is not present?
You must make, an application where is used TeeChartDirect2D for O.S support SlimDX and the other application where is used TeeChart.Net for O.S doesn't support SlimDX.
I hope will helps.
