Isn't possible in design mode, assign the sort field as text. To check the problem you should only follow the steps below: 
1- Add a chart in the Windows form.
2- Add 2 series. 
3- Open Chart Editor and go to Series->General
4- Change the Sort value from X to Text and close
5- Open again the Chart editor and go to Series->General
The Sort combobox value is None instead of Text.
